Seit 2020 arbeitet das National Bureau of Asian Research (NBR) an einem Projekt mit dem Titel „Meeting China´s Military Challenge: Identifying Collective Response among U. S. Allies and Security Partners in the Indo-Pacific Region.” Soeben hat die Projektgruppe einen Bericht unter dem Titel “Meeting China´s Emerging Capabilities“ herausgegeben. Im Einführungsartikel stellt Bates Gill (Asia Society Policy Institute) fest: „China poses an increasing threat to the sovereign, territorial, and security interests of many U.S. allies and security partners in the Indo-Pacific.” Wie die asiatischen Alliierten und Partner der USA das Bedrohungspotential Chinas wahrnehmen, wird in sechs Artikeln von Wissenschaftlern aus Australien, Taiwan, Indien, Japan, Vietnam und von den Philippinen beschrieben. Bei deren Analysen ergab sich – so Gill – “a wide degree if variance”. Deshalb kommt Gill zu dem Schluss: “One of the biggest challenges for the United States is developing a greater region-wide understanding and consensus on the security threats China poses and the collective action that can counter them.”
